Caregiver’s job duties and responsibilities can depend on the employing family’s specific needs. Depending on the requirement of the job there are can be different types of caregivers. For an example some caregivers are live-in caregivers. Some do a part time job as parents only need help to take care of their child for certain days or certain time period. (holidays, overseas business tour etc) Also there are on call nannies too. But there are basic duties and responsibilities that are common for all types of caregivers.

The primary duty of a caregiver is ensuring child’s safety and health. A caregiver always should have an eye on the child. There are several basic things a caregiver should do to protect the child. Few examples are washing child’s hand before eat, avoid child’s contact with sharp tools/toys and plugs etc. Also the things like pets which can bite the kid, bottle of medicine that left on the table within the child’s reach, cabinets and boxes that are not locked would be few things to watch out. A caregiver should protect the child when they are outside as well. When the caregiver goes outdoor with child, she should make sure child’s safety by checking the seat belts of child, avoiding contact with strangers, always holding a hand of child when they are walking around etc. Even though the many primary duties of a caregiver are about safety and health of the child, there are other things than can be equally important as well. The child needs to enjoy his/her time with the caregiver. Therefore caregiver can plan various activities to cheer up child such as singing, playing, reading books, creating arts and crafts, preparing meals or a juice together etc. But she needs to make sure that the activities are meaningful. Watching TV and playing video games together is not recommended.

A caregiver has duties and responsibilities that regard to child’s parents and family as well. Be on time, protect the parent’s trust, good communication with parents, protecting family’s reputation, being friendly but professional are few important things a caregiver should consider. Overall, it is about maintaining a good relationship with the child’s family.
